Girls and Boys Building Competition by NAWIC
January 28, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
FreeBLOCK KIDS introduces children to design and construction careers during a hands-on event that uses their creative thinking and reasoning skills.
During this one-day event presented by the Kansas City chapter of National Association of Women in Construction, students in grades 1-6 start with a tool kit of 90 interlocking blocks, 1 piece of string, 1 piece of aluminum foil and 1 piece of construction paper and then spend 45 minutes creating a “mini-model” of a “commercial” structure of their own imagination. The creative process is followed by a brief consultation with a local industry volunteer (aka “Building Inspector”), who talks to the student about the project and the process of thinking and making. In these conversations, students are judged on their oral presentation, clarity of purpose, for a chance to advance to regional competition.
The event is free, but space is limited to 100 participants. See more details and register here: http://www.kcnawic.org/block-kids.html
