Bridging the Gender Divide: Toys That Build STEM Skills

Join the University of Missouri-Kansas City-School of Computing & Engineering Alumni Association as they co-host a virtual sneak peek of “Bridging the Gender Divide: Toys That Build STEM Skills” with the National Museum of Toys/Miniatures.

Attendees will view a pre-recorded preview that features a few highlights and items that are a part of the exhibit. After the recording, there will be a live Q&A with exhibit  curator Amy McKune.

About the Exhibit:

This new exhibit takes a historical look at how toys helped children develop skills that contributed to success in careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The exhibit examines the way STEM toys were marketed primarily to boys from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century and the impact that had on career choices. Just as toys have historically helped build skills and inspire young men to pursue STEM careers, today’s toys can help young women and men develop the skills necessary to succeed.

About the Curator – Amy McKune:

Amy McKune has served as T/m’s Curator of Collections since 2017. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Kenyon College and an M.A. in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program, SUNY – Oneonta. During Amy’s 30-year career, she has served in curatorial and collections management positions for five museums. In 1996, she played a key role in creating the new Washington State History Museum (Tacoma, WA) and a 23,000 ft² long-term exhibition on Washington State’s history. Amy is drawn to topics related to equity for women, so she welcomed the opportunity to curate this exhibition.
