Block Kids Building Program
February 2, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will promote careers in construction and the trades to girls and boys in grades 1-6 through its annual Block Kids Competition. Check in opens at 8:30 a.m. with the competition running from 10:15 to 11 a.m. followed by judging.
Students receive a tool kit of 90 interlocking blocks, one piece of string, one piece of aluminum foil and one piece of construction paper. In 45 minutes, they must create a “mini-model” of a “commercial” structure of their own imagination. The creative process is followed by a brief consultation with a local industry volunteer (aka “Building Inspector”), who talks to the student about his/her project and the process of thinking and making. In these conversations, students are judged on their oral presentation, clarity of purpose, etc.
