You go girl! FIRST Robotics Competition 1710 introduces girls to STEM

What if it were as easy to find a hero in the STEM world as it is in the sports world? Olathe-based FIRST Robotics Team 1710 is finding out as part of its ‘You Go Girl’ STEM outreach program, which began more than 11 years ago to bring more females to the team.

Jordan Love, who served as the team’s CEO in 2016-17, says the team distributes its series of posters, buttons and trading cards featuring female mentors, team members and famous women in STEM at outreach events and competitions. The idea has served as a template for other teams.

The team also organizes more hands-on events for Title I middle school girls in the Olathe school district, offering STEM activities from eyeball dissection to cybersecurity, and last year served as the regional partner for FIRST Ladies, a network of women in FIRST started by a FIRST Tech Challenge team in Australia.
