Team Up for Math helps Kansas City students build math skills and confidence through hands-on learning. With board games, card games and other activities, students practice estimating, strategizing and using math in everyday situations.
A partnership among KC STEM Alliance, Burns & McDonnell and the Kansas City Chiefs, Team Up for Math brings engaging math experiences to Kansas City schools and gives educators, volunteers and families practical ways to support learning. Through play and problem-solving, students can discover that they are confident, capable math learners.

Team Up for Math supports teachers alongside students through professional development and ongoing coaching from our partners at 4D Math Alliance. Participating third-grade teachers take part in sessions focused on teacher math identity, foundations, and discourse facilitation of game-based learning, and more. Additionally, teachers receive monthly 45-minute virtual coaching sessions. This support helps educators build confidence in teaching mathematics, develop practical strategies for facilitating game-based learning, and create positive, engaging math experiences for all learners.

Over the next five years, the program will expand to additional school districts across the Kansas City region, reaching more students and creating new opportunities for community members to make a meaningful impact in the classroom. As the program grows, it will continue to engage volunteers from across the region to support third-grade students in building foundational math skills, confidence, and a stronger connection to learning.
Volunteers play an important role in making this program possible. If you are interested in supporting students through Team Up for Math, sign up to express your interest. We’ll keep you informed as the program expands and new volunteer opportunities become available across the Kansas City region.
