KU Natural History Museum’s Science on Tap | Free State Brewing Co.
April 17, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
During this Science on Tap, Museum Director Dr. Leonard Krishtalka will discuss “Keeping the devils out: Grotesques of the KU Natural History Museum.”
In 1903, twelve limestone grotesques were placed on pedestals along the roof line of Dyche Hall. They overlooked the KU campus until last year, when they were taken down to conserve them from further weathering and erosion. Why were they carved specifically for the Museum, the only building at KU to feature grotesques? What does this unique mythological menagerie of stone animals represent? The answers may lie in a singular fusion of art, science, architecture and the sacred.
