Just for girls: Diagnosing & Improving Bicycle Networks + Bike Ride
October 14, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 1:30 pm
FreeWTS and Transportation YOU is partnering with BikeWalkKC to provide a STEM program for 13- to 18-year-old girls that focuses on integrating bicycle facilities into our transportation systems. This activity will be a hands-on opportunity to conduct a bicycle audit of an existing street network to identify the quality of the existing bicycle facilities. It will be followed by planning and design brainstorming to identify ways the existing streets could be modified to provide a better bicycle network.
The event will also explore the role of advocacy in planning for alternative modes of transportation such as bicycles within our transportation network. This activity will be led by a team of transportation planners, engineers and bicycle advocates. Donuts will be provided in the morning. The STEM activity will be followed by a lunch before we learn bicycle safety tips and head out on a bike ride (bicycles and safety equipment are available to use courtesy of BikeWalkKC or bring your own).
