PLTW biomed students map out capstone projects
Project Lead The Way students in their senior capstone course of the Biomedical Sciences pathway gathered at the KC University of Medicine & Biosciences in late November to dive deeper into career pathways and gather insights for their capstone projects.
Dr. Keith Gary, Vice President of BioNexus KC, offered the keynote address, sharing his own winding career path in the field, and in a presentation from the KC UMB team students heard what admissions teams really look for in applications to med school.
Breakout sessions gave students the chance to learn more about research/experimental design, brainstorm their project ideas for product development in the biomed field and to learn about career paths in public health.

Civil Engineering & Design Careers Day
The Younger Members Group of the American Society of Civil Engineers-Kansas City and the Center for Architecture and Design teamed up with KC STEM Alliance to offer PLTW students an up close look at career possibilities during an event in late November.
Students enrolled in PLTW’s Civil Engineering & Architecture course from around the metro kicked off the day at the KU Edwards Campus, where they heard from industry leaders and took part in a career and education jumping session. Professionals from civil engineering disciplines including site/civil, transportation, water resources and structural answered questions and shared information about their careers with students.
At the same time, design professionals representing architecture, urban planning, graphic design, landscape architecture, interior design, experiential design and industrial design provided insights and examples of their work.
Post-secondary institutions also were on hand to help students see the variety of educational pathways available to work in these fields.
In the afternoon, engineering and design firms across the metro opened their doors so students could see what these jobs are like firsthand.
