09 Dec 2019 K-12 CSEd in KC: A new report from KC STEM Alliance
Kansas City, MO (December 9, 2019)—As the Kansas City region recognizes Computer Science Education Week, the KC STEM Alliance today released a review of the current state of K-12 computer science education in the region.
Executive Director Martha McCabe said the report contains encouraging news while recognizing much work remains to fill the tech talent pipeline in Kansas City.
“The percentage of schools in our region offering computer science courses is twice the national average and the majority of those schools use a high quality nationally recognized curriculum,” McCabe said.
McCabe says the report includes other positive news, including widespread adoption of a curriculum that integrates computer science at the elementary school level and a rich variety of out-of-school programs that can encourage an interest in the field.
“Kansas City has put together a great foundation for preparing young people to succeed in the tech industry,” McCabe said. “But we know we have much work to do to ensure these offerings are accessible and equitable to all.”
