In the news: Fox 4 reports on Hour of Code

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some metro students are spending more time than usual on the computer this week; it’s a good thing. Monday is not only Girls in Tech KC Day, it’s also computer science education week.

“Even traffic lights use coding to control how they work. There are a ton of job opportunities for our students. By exposing them early, it might be what they want to do. It might look like a simple computer game,” said Kristi Meyer, a math teacher at Alta Vista Middle School.

Middle schoolers are actually creating the game as they play. The Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science to show that anyone can learn the basics.

Meyer organized this event with the help of other math teachers at Alta Vista Middle School. Her hope is that it gives her students a desire to pursue a career in technology.

Jaleeyah Anderson is in 9th grade but came back to her former classroom to help out. Because she learned about coding early on, she hopes to become a software developer.

“We need girls. We need more girls like these girls,” said Anderson.
