Dreaming about becoming an engineer, a scientist, or another STEM professional begins with understanding what people in those careers actually do every day. The KC STEM Alliance wants to promote career awareness by connecting student with real professionals.

Volunteers are an essential element to the success of the KC STEM Alliance mission. STEM professionals, educators, parents and even students can volunteer their time and expertise to support local STEM students, programs and events. Not only can these volunteer experiences be rewarding and fulfilling from both a personal and professional standpoint, but they can also be fun and exciting.

Currently, the KC STEM Alliance partners with two nationally recognized STEM programs, Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and US FIRST. Volunteer opportunities with these two organizations can include the following:

PLTW: Project Lead the Way (PLTW) volunteers support students in a non-traditional, project-oriented classroom setting.  Volunteers might serve on a partnership team, visit a classroom or serve as mentors.  PLTW volunteers and their companies may also offer job shadowing, field trips or internships.

US FIRST: FIRST volunteers work with students after school in a fun, interactive setting where they can apply science and math principles to build robots.  FIRST volunteers might work with grade school and middle school students involved with FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotic challenges or at the high school level with the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) a high energy, exciting robotics competition.
