Exploring STEM

The Kansas City region offers all kinds of ways to explore science, technology, engineering and math–from project-based classes in school to exciting after-school programs for all ages.

FIRST Robotics

FIRST® Robotics starts with FIRST LEGO League Jr. for 6 to 9 year olds and builds to the high school-level FIRST Robotics Competition. The program combines the rigors of science with the excitement of sports to engage students in STEM. In our region, KC STEM Alliance facilitates FIRST events and competitions. See if there’s a team at your school or in your neighborhood. If not, find out how to start one of your own! Learn more.

Project Lead The Way Courses

This in-school curriculum allows you as a student to solve real world problems in several career pathways. At the high school level, the pathways include:

From launching space explorations to delivering safe, clean water to communities, engineers find solutions to pressing problems and turn their ideas into reality. Through courses like Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Environmental Sustainability, and Civil Engineering and Architecture, PLTW Engineering empowers you to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset and make the leap from being a dreamer to being a doer.

Biomedical Science

Through courses like Biomedical Innovation, PLTW Biomedical Science lets you step into the roles of medical investigators, surgeons, microbiologists, geneticists and biomedical engineers to explore realistic situations. You might investigate the death of a fictional person or analyze the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Computer Science

Engage in real-world activities like creating an online art portal or using automation to process and analyze DNA-sequence data as you think big and illustrate how intricately computer science is woven into our society.

PLTW is available in more than 30 school districts in the metro area. See if your district is included here (link to PDF of participating schools–until we have a better way). You can learn more about PLTW and its opportunities for students here.

More STEM Opportunities

You may be surprised at how many ways you can learn about STEM in the metro area! A new initiative called ecosySTEM KC is working on making these easy to find but in the meantime, make sure to check out the programs offered by ecosySTEM partners. See the list of partners.
